How to choose a compliance service provider

Look for relevant competence, clear scope and a dependable way to deal with questions.

Match experience to your premises

Ask about comparable work: the type of premises, activities, complexity and people using the site. A qualification or membership may be relevant evidence, but it is not a substitute for checking that the person and service fit this particular job.

Verify what is claimed

Ask for the details behind registrations, accreditations, insurance and subcontracting. Check current claims with the issuing organisation where possible. Establish who will carry out the work and who takes responsibility for reviewing it.

Check the working relationship

Agree access, disruption, report timing, how technical questions are answered and the complaints route before booking. Keep the agreed scope with the quote. Paid visibility on a website should never be treated as evidence of technical competence.

Questions to include in your quote request

Send the same brief to each provider, and ask them to identify assumptions and exclusions in their reply.

  • Who will actually carry out and review the work?
  • What relevant experience can you demonstrate?
  • How can I verify your credentials and the scope they cover?
  • How do you handle disputed findings or a complaint?
