A headline price rarely tells the whole story. Put two quotes on the same footing before you decide.

Use the same period for both quotes: a one-off job, or the visits you are considering over a year. You choose the visit count; this tool does not recommend how often work is needed.

Include travel, the visits you are considering, and any one-off charges. Leave optional extras blank if none apply.

Five things to compare alongside the price

  1. Coverage: the same premises, areas, circuits or items?
  2. Deliverable: what report, findings and explanation will you receive?
  3. Exclusions: inaccessible areas, retests, certificates, repairs or out-of-hours charges?
  4. Competence: does the person doing the work have relevant experience for this job?
  5. Terms: cancellation, automatic renewal, payment and who authorises extras?

Use the VAT treatment shown on the actual quote. “Excluding VAT” can help a business compare underlying prices, but this tool does not determine whether VAT is recoverable. Check current VAT rates at GOV.UK.
